Sister in Red

SHORT NARRATIVE (horror/fantasy)

On her first road trip alone, a young woman hears a chilling sound inside her motel room and must decide how to suffer her fear: alone with her dark imagination, or in the company of an eccentric ex-circus star with an otherworldly explanation for the sound.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

“Sister in Red” tells a familiar horror story. But this time our main character does not face her demise from a beast, nor does her anxiety tear her apart from the inside for audience enjoyment. Instead, Eden learns to accept that every situation is potentially dangerous for someone who is not a cisgender man and that a wild imagination is not the enemy, but a potential path through fear via folklore. “Sister in Red” relishes in the juicy contradiction that to put words to what we fear, even if absurd, might at first scare us more, but will ultimately make us feel more alive, more whole, more seen.

The script is based on a massive survey of interviews about fear and folkloric traditions conducted by the director. Thus, “Sister in Red” reflects the lives of all types of people engaging bravely with what scares them in a world which gives them a myriad of reasons to succumb to the overwhelming nature of fear. This story affirms the beauty and survival value of oral storytelling, traverses multiple forms of media through pairing 2D animation and live action, and shatters tired victim, mentor, and monster tropes which have never served the femme, queer experience of fear. This project truly revels in the fabulous perspective women and nonbinary people in horror can bring.
